As many of us know, last week the world lost a great leader and icon in Nelson Mandela.  During the time of sadness and mourning, people took the time to express how they feel on social media.

On twitter, 7.2 million people tweeted about his death, including 95,000 tweets per minute.  Though that did not set any records, it was the most about someone this year thus far.

On Facebook, 39 million people generated more than 80 million interactions related to Mandela's death. As to be expected, South Africa was the second most active country in terms of posts about its former president, following only the United States.

This goes to show you how many people take to social media when they hear about thews they believe is important.  This is why many people claim to get their news on social media because that's where everyone talks about the latest news.  Suck's having to go on twitter and finding out about a death though.
